Passport application

To obtain a biometric passport, you need to first make an appointment with the French Consulate General via our online booking system. On the day of the appointment, you need to bring the required documents according to your situation: if you are a minor, if this is the first request or a renewal, if you have a secured French ID card or not.

The identity picture that you will provide must respect certain criteria (for instance, the picture must have a solid light blue or grey backdrop). Click here for more information.

First Application

Who can make the application?
You must be a French national. Your presence is required both on the day of the applciation and on the day of collection.

The passport is not made on site and therefore cannot be delivered immediately, the average turnaround time is 3 to 7 weeks from the day the application is made. Please take this into consideration when applying.

Lost or stolen passport

If your passport has been lost or stolen in South Africa, you need first to declare it to the South African local police. Then, you will need to come to the Consulate with the affidavit to declare the loss or theft. As soon as you have completed the process, a new passport can be requested immediately.

The documents to provide in order to request a new passport depends on the type of passport that was lost.

Emergency passports

A temporary passport, also known as an emergency passport, can be delivered in case of an emergency for medical or professional reasons or else to allow you to go back to your place of residence when it is not France when your passport was stolen or lost on South African territory. This passport, which is not biometric, costs 45 euros which can be paid in rands based on the prevailing embassy exchange rate at the time of application and it is valid FOR ONE YEAR ONLY.

Warning: Delivering emergency passports is not an automatic procedure. You need to contact the Consulate General to make sure that your situation justifies the need for an emergency passport before booking an appointment

Issuance
If the request is accepted, the emergency passport is generally issued on the same day it has been requested.

Collection
You have to collect it personally and sign it. The expired passport will be handed back to you if you provided one. If it contained a visa permit, you can keep it until the visa permit has expired.

Period of validity
Your new passport is valid FOR ONE YEAR.

FOR CHILDREN

First Request

Who can make the application?
It is possible to request a passport for a child no matter their age (even a baby) as long as they are French nationals. The child’s presence is required on the day of the request, regardless of their age. They have to be accompanied by a parent or tutor.
