JPEG To obtain a biometric passport, you need first to make an appointment online with one of our agents at the French Consulate General. On the day of the appointment, you need to arrive with the required documents according to your situation: if you are a minor, if this is the first request or a renewal, if you have a secured French ID book or not.

First Request

Who can make the request?
You have to have the French nationality. Your presence is requested both on the day of the request and on the day of withdrawal.

Since any passport request requires the provision of an identity picture conforming to certain norms since September, 1st, 2015, the fee to pay (in cash only) is the equivalent in rands of 96 euros based on the prevailing embassy exchange rate at the time of application.

Issuance
The passport is not issued on site so it cannot be delivered immediately. On average, there is a 3 weeks gap between the date of request and the date of issuance. You must take this into consideration before requesting a new passport.

N.B. If you have run out of pages in your passport, you can ask for its renewal without any fee but with the same expiration date as the first one.

When can you make the request?
The passport can be renewed before or after its expiration date. However, if the old passport is still valid when the request is made, there will be no deduction in price.

Lost or stolen passport

If you are an adult and your passport has been lost or stolen in South Africa, you need first to declare it to the South African local police. Then, you need to come to the Consulate with the affadavit to declare the loss or theft. As soon as you have completed the process, a new passport can be requested immediately.

Emergency passports

A temporary passport, also known as an emergency passport, can be delivered in case of an emergency for medical or professional reasons or else to allow you to go back to your place of residence when it is not France when your passport was stolen or lost on South African territory. This passport costs 45 euros which can be paid in rands based on the prevailing embassy exchange rate at the time of application and it is valid FOR ONE YEAR ONLY.

Warning: Delivering emergency passports is not an automatic procedure. You need to contact the Consulate General to make sure that your situation justifies the need for an emergency passport*

Who can make the request?
It is possible to request a passport for a minor no matter his age (even a baby) as long as he has the French nationality. His presence is compulsory on the day of the request, no matter his age. He has to be accompanied by a parent or tutor and in case the parents are not married, the parent accompanying the child must be in possession of the written authorization of the other parent.
