Message of condolences following the passing of Ahmed Kathrada
Message of condolences from Ambassador of France to South Africa HE Christophe Farnaud following the passing of Mr. Ahmed Kathrada:
“On behalf of the French Republic, I would like to express my deepest condolences to the family of Ahmed Kathrada, as well as the South African people, following his passing.
South Africa mourns one of its most important struggle stalwarts, who dedicated his life, until the very end, to fighting oppression and injustice. His struggle for freedom will remain a reference for all those all over the world who continue to fight for a better world for all.
We are honoured to have counted Mr. Kathrada among the friends of the Embassy, and to have had the immense opportunity to honour his lifelong engagement towards justice and peace, with the medal of Knight of the Legion of Honour. Mr. Kathrada will also be deeply missed by our fellow citizens in Reunion Island, who have bestowed on him honorary citizenship of Le Port city. The universal values that he fought for are at the foundation of South African and French democracy and we will continue to fight for them alongside South Africa.
In this time of sorrow, my thoughts are with the family, and with all South Africans who have lost one of their most beloved heroes. France joins in the immense sadness of the people of South Africa.”
