Francophonie Month 2023
This year’s festival will feature multiple aspects of the French language and culture, through theatre, literature, history, music, gastronomy, and cinema. These events are made possible by the participation of Francophone organisations and institutions from several countries in and around Cape Town.

Literature: Sex, Violence and the African Woman. Hope and Liberation in the Short Stories of Calixthe Beyala, by Jessica Glaeser, PhD student at the University of the Western Cape.
Calixthe Beyala, born in Cameroon, is one of sub-Saharan Africa’s most celebrated contemporary French-language novelists. Her work has been translated into many languages and her success was crowned by her election to the Académie française.

THURSDAY 30 MARCH
Literature and history: Pierre Simond, Huguenot pastor and poet, by Emeritus Prof. David J Culpin, University of Western Cape.
Pierre Simond arrived in Cape Town in 1688 as a pastor of French Huguenot refugees. Through his work, the presentation will give us an insight into the life of the early Huguenots in South Africa and highlight the development of the French language at a turning point in its history.
